Please try to telephone reception before 11:00 if you require a home visit.
We will only visit patients who are housebound, i.e. who require an ambulance to leave the house, or who are genuinely too unwell to travel to the practice. There are several reasons for this:
(1) Quality
Our ability to properly assess and to treat a patient seen outside the practice is limited by available equipment and by the home environment. These restrictions do not apply in-surgery.
(2) Equity
Where patients can come in to surgery, even if this requires assistance from carers, friends, family members, or taxis, visiting them unnecessarily delays and limits the care the practice can offer to its entire patient list. This is neither equitable nor fair.
(3) Efficiency
Visits are time-consuming for healthcare professionals, as only 2-3 patients can be seen per hour in a home setting (with fewer assessment and treatment options), compared with 6 or more at the surgery. Thus making unnecessary visits degrades the service we can offer to the population we serve.
Where practical we will accommodate requests that patients making a particular effort to travel to us are seen, for instance, first on an afternoon list. Please tell reception at booking if you feel this is the case.
You can be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.
